What if social media wasn’t designed around just humans? The HyperObjects app is a social platform where rivers, fungi, mountains, thunderstorms, and star systems have their own profiles, and every post is a collaboration between human and nonhuman presences. This talk explores how changing who - and what - we can build relationships with could transform our social technology, creative expression, and sense of belonging.

Virtual Performance

Imagine a single mountain as a fraction of all mineral species, or the millions of years it took to form “mountain” at all. Hyperobjects are like hashtags, implying metadata of time and space.

The Hyperobject Virtual Lab was a curated program that took place virtually in 2020-2023. It connected artists, designers, architects, scientists, earth guardians, coders, environmental researchers, quantum travelers, magicians, ceremonial masters, frequency holders, cave dwellers, ancient code keepers, and infinity incarnated co-creating with hyperobjects.

To call something a hyperobject means to consider its inherent multidimensionality, implying metadata of time and space. Imagine a single mountain as a fraction of all mineral species, or the millions of years it took to form “mountain” at all.

hyperobjects.io is an interspecies performance in honor of all expressions of life. It allows artists to initiate environmental stewardship and be part of a planetary community to play, learn, unlearn, and expand their consciousness. 

In this session, we’ll be thinking of our identity in relationship to surrounding life forms, elements and metabolisms as a “quantum selfie.” Through a guided meditation we’ll "tune into" a hyperobject of our choice on a different plane of consciousness and create artworks based on our individual unfolding imagery.

We’ll then create profiles in the hyperobject app, geo-tag these artworks on an interactive, borderless map and brainstorm a micro-scale environmental project to potentially fund after the final software has been launched.

Please wear comfortable clothes and have art supplies available :)

Growing our Networks in Uncertain Times - Places, Toronto (CA)

To call something a hyperobject means to look at it with new eyes, to reclaim its inherent mystery. Hyperobjects are comparable to hashtags, implying metadata of time and space.

This virtual workshop / morphogenetic performance starts off with a short walkthrough and the creation of individual user profiles. Participants are encouraged to think of their identity in relationship to surrounding life forms, elements and metabolisms as a synthesized “quantum selfie.” The group will be guided through an interdimensional meditation to "tune into" the hyperobject on a different plane of consciousness to then create and geo-tag an artwork or story related to it on the map.

Our Networks is a conference about the past, present, and future of building our own network infrastructures. The event brings together enthusiasts, hardware and software hackers, researchers, organizers and more to collectively explore creative and critical engagements with the Internet and alternative infrastructures.

This initial group exhibition featured 17 artists from 5 continents and was fully biodegradable, with exception of the technology needed for display. All artworks were manufactured using local materials and following the artist’s instructions. Instead of solitary human art practice, this show featured collaborations of human and nonhuman entities.
